Giving Up a License
- Status after lapse: lapsed (or, if licensee proactively elects it, inactive)
- Lapse consequences: Late/administrative fee applies for a late renewal application; a lapsed license must go through reinstatement (not simple renewal) once expired.
- Reinstatement: To reinstate a lapsed license (2+ years lapsed per Board regulation): file a completed reinstatement application, pay the reinstatement fee, and attest to completed continued competency hours equal to the requirement for the number of lapsed years (capped at 4 years). If inactive/lapsed over 4 years with fewer than 640 clinical practice hours in the preceding 4 years, the Board may require a specialty examination (SPEX, COMVEX-USA, SPEC, or podiatry equivalent). The Board may deny reinstatement for violations under Va. Code § 54.1-2915.
