Quirks & Gotchas
- Jurisprudence Exam: Not required
- Fingerprints/Background Check: Required
- Mandatory CME Topics: Opioid, Implicit Bias, Controlled Substance, Pdmp
- Initial application fee: $310 (non-refundable)
- Annual renewal: $512 total, broken down as $436 base + $50 physician rehabilitation/peer review fund + $26 MHCC assessment. Not all sources flag the $50 rehabilitation fund surcharge.
- CME non-compliance penalty: $100 per missing CME credit. With 50 credits required, worst-case exposure is $5,000.
- Timing is a gotcha: Submit fingerprints no earlier than 6 weeks before submitting the license application. Too early and the background check expires before processing.
- Unresolved Maryland state tax liability blocks renewal. The Board has access to MDComp tax records; outstanding state taxes hard-stop the renewal.
These quirks are researched from state board websites and may change. Verify with the board directly before applying.
